Step-by-step procedure

1. Identify the noisy hinge by moving the door slowly while listening at each hinge.
2. Place a cloth below the hinge to protect the floor and trim.
3. Tap the hinge pin upward only far enough to expose the friction surfaces.
4. Wipe the pin clean and apply a small amount of silicone, dry PTFE or light machine lubricant suitable for hinges.
5. Reinsert the pin and operate the door repeatedly to distribute the lubricant.
6. Wipe away excess product. Replace a visibly bent or deeply scored pin.
